ASHLAND, NH – The Common Man family’s Director of Training Cindy Bates, PHR, CHT has been elected by her hospitality industry peers across the country to the board of directors of the national professional association, the Council of Hotel & Restaurant Trainers (CHART). 

Bates, of Belmont, NH has been a member of CHART for more than seven years.  Her recent election to the board during the organization’s summer conference in New Orleans, LA, makes her head of the Regional Training Forum (RTF) activities for CHART, and also secretary of the board.  Bates will also assist with planning CHART’s national conferences for its more than 500 members in Seattle, WA and Charleston, SC in 2016, as well as scout locations for 2017.

“It’s an honor to be selected by a group of my peers,” said Bates.  “Being on the CHART board of directors exposes me to trends in hospitality across the country, which I can bring back to our New Hampshire hospitality family and implement where we see a good fit.”

Bates began her career with The Common Man family as a server at Tilt’n Diner in Tilton in 1992.  She was promoted to general manager of the diner in 1998, and became The Common Man’s first director of training in 2006.  She now leads training initiatives for The Common Man’s entire hospitality family of more than 1,000 employees.  Bates developed a management mentor program and conducts various training seminars across the company.  She also advises on human resources policies and procedures, and leads recruitment of new talent.

Bates is a Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT) recognized by the National Restaurant and Lodging Association, and in 2014, achieved a Professional Human Resource designation (PHR) from the Society of Human Resources. She is a graduate of Colby Sawyer College.

As part of The Common Man’s mantra to DO GOOD, Bates has always been actively involved in giving back to the community.  In her time at the Tilt’n Diner, she led many fundraising 
efforts for local organizations including hosting benefit dinners and providing food and support for Cash N Cans and the Greater Lakes Region Children’s Auction.  She has also participated in the Made in NH Expo at The Common Man’s table, selling crab cakes to benefit CASA of NH, and contributes to numerous other Common Man charitable events each year.

Bates represents The Common Man family as a member of the educational board of directors of the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association (NHLRA), and serves as an advisory board member for the NH Technical College culinary program as well as the Hout Technical Center in Laconia, and the Plymouth High School educational advisory committee.
